How Sweet It Is!

I recently asked Go Fayetteville’s Facebook followers to spill their secrets and share their thoughts on the best bakery in Cumberland County. Almost 100 locals replied to our question with nominations (and passionate comments) for the best of the best. There's no shortage of sweet shops in this area, but three bakeries, specifically, were mentioned over and over. Now that the locals have spoken, we think our out-of-town visitors and travelers should be privy to this insider intel. Without further ado, here’s where you should plan on treating yourself to delectable baked goods this holiday season.

Well over a third of our locals’ votes was for this charming little bakery, conveniently located in Millstone Towne Centre. What makes this shop so darn popular? Scrumptious, cream-filled cupcakes that make you want to lick the icing right off the top. This bakery rotates their cupcake flavor profiles daily, so customers never know what they might find behind the counter.

My suggestion to any newcomer is to order a few of the best-selling seasonal flavors, such as Mrs. Claus’ Hot Chocolate, Snowball Coconut, Rudolph’s Red Velvet or White Chocolate Peppermint. If cupcakes aren’t your thing, try a just-as-tasty brownie, cake-pop, French macaron, cheesecake or cookie. Gluten-free and vegan eaters, you’re in luck here, too, as Frostings offers gluten-free options daily and vegan options Friday through Sunday.

Tasting Table recently asked Facebook users to share “where to find the best pie (and pie shop) in each of the 50 states,” and it was no surprise to any customer of Fayetteville Pie Company when it was voted the best in North Carolina. According to Tasting Table, “No flag waved as freely as the one for this veteran-owned-and-operated shop.” Having outgrown their original downtown site in fewer than 2 years, they recently moved into a large space in the Westwood Shopping Center that they decorated in a charming countryside French motif.

My advice to first-timers is to order a lunch combo: one 6” deep-dish savory pot pie plus one 4.5” sweet pie. The rotating menu guarantees you’ll never run out of flavors to try. As examples, the sweet pie flavors currently on their menu are Peach Champagne, Eggnog Custard and Gingerbread Hat-Trick. FayPieCo also sells full-size holiday pies, like Caramel Apple Pear Crisp and Rosy Raspberry and Pear, as well as take-and-bake pies.

Those folks who ever had the pleasure of visiting Burney’s in Elizabethtown or Clinton, North Carolina, were thrilled when a third location popped up in Fayetteville last year. My coworkers regularly stop by this bakery to pick up a box or two of the iconic Burney’s Croissants. Fried and filled with delectable flavors like buttercream, chocolate and lemon, the glazed pastries rarely last more than 15 minutes in my office.

To newbies, I suggest you try the classic Burney’s Croissant in a variety of flavors. I can guarantee that a box of a dozen will win you big brownie points with family, coworkers or friends alike over the holidays. Don’t overlook this bakery’s other sweet treats, though. Some of their more popular offerings are cinnamon rolls, banana pudding, pecan pie and a 15-layer chocolate cake. They also take custom orders for just about any dessert under the sun.

Are you visiting the greater Fayetteville area over the holidays? We recently shared some warm, inviting spots to gather with loved ones; read more about that on “Places to Gather with Friends & Family.” Tons of holiday festivities and other fun events are taking place here over the holidays, as well, and you may find more details about those on the Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Calendar of Events.
