A Fun-Run Bucket List

May 16, 2017

Summertime in the greater Fayetteville area is shaping up to be a runner’s dream, with six fun runs scheduled to take place over just eight weeks. In Cumberland County, we’re racing for doughnuts and for peace, for crazy photo-ops and for the red, white, and blue. Mostly, though, we’re running for the personal challenge and thrill of it, and there is no better reason to plan a visit to this area than for this bucket list of fun runs.

The Color Run: Dream World Tour 2017
Crown Complex – May 27

Dream in color on a magical 5K course with this popular race, taking place over Memorial Day weekend. You may sign up as an individual, but this is one of those runs that is a blast to experience with a team of friends or family members. Just don’t forget your phone/camera for photo-ops with the giant unicorns!

10th Annual Run for the Legend
Airborne and Special Operations Museum – June 3

Sign up for this 5K/10K and help support an incredible museum. The USA Track & Field-certified course starts and ends in beautiful downtown Fayetteville, with the top three finishers in each age group receiving medals. For only $20, with a t-shirt thrown in, it would be hard to find a cheaper run. Feel free to bring your strollers and leashed dogs along, too.

Krispy Kreme Challenge
Festival Park –
June 17

Get ready to take on a unique challenge with this 5-mile run/walk that will benefit 5 Sparrows, a local nonprofit organization. The deal is, you have to run 2.5 miles through downtown Fayetteville, stop and eat a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and then complete the last 2.5 miles. Stick around after the race to enjoy live music on stage!

Firecracker 4 Miler
North Carolina Veterans Park – July 4

Kick off your 4th of July festivities with this family-oriented fun run and Fayetteville Running Club’s premier event. You may sign up for a 1-mile or 4-mile course that will wind through downtown Fayetteville and highlight the beauty of our city. Just be sure to dress up in your red, white, and blue for this patriotic race!

African World Peace 5K Run
Taste of West Africa – July 15

Unite with fellow runners at this special 5K run/walk, benefiting Loving Hands International and Cultural & Heritage Alliance. The race kicks off the African World Peace Festival, an annual celebration of African culture that takes place in downtown Fayetteville. Stay all day to enjoy the parade, performing arts, African cuisine, and more.

GLOW Fun Run
Festival Park – July 21

Escape the heat and join this nighttime 5K run/walk, one of the special events planned for the Positive Direction for Youth (PDY) Conference. More than just a family fun run, the festivities will also include glow gear, food trucks, and the GLOW After-Party, with performances by Jor’Dan Armstrong and Rapture Ruckus. Just don’t forget to bring lawn chairs for the show.

Cumberland County’s communities are an adventure destination, and many of our recreational attractions and parks may be found on the All-American Adventure Trail. The Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (FACVB) created this handy guide to help our visitors explore the area and everything we have to offer—from zip-lining to rock climbing to indoor skydiving. While planning your visit here, also be sure to check out the many other events taking place over the summer on the FACVB’s Calendar of Events.
