Fayetteville’s Gospel Tradition

September 6, 2017

gospelIn 1958, a Top 40-style radio station known as WIDU (“wee-do”) was born in Fayetteville. It later became the first black radio station in the city, and this year, WIDU 1600AM is celebrating 30 years of broadcasting gospel music. More than just a radio station, though, WIDU also produces an annual event that features nationally renowned recording artists, inspirational speakers, clergy members and community leaders. The weeklong celebration is one of the biggest faith-based events to take place in Cumberland County. Visitors to the area will be celebrating our longstanding gospel tradition with WIDU at these fantastic events this October.

Women’s Empowerment Luncheon
Crown Expo Center – October 12

Enjoy a special luncheon just for the ladies and take in an empowering message from guest speaker Pastor Ruby Holland and guest psalmist Kelly Price. Afterward, spend some time at the WIDU Expo, where you may browse vendors, artist stages, educational sessions, and more.

Carolina’s Best
Crown Coliseum – October 12

Watch singers from all over the Carolinas compete in four categories at this competition. JJ Hairston & Youthful Praise will kick the night off with a concert. Then 17 contestants will compete for the title of “Carolina’s Best” as judges share their feedback. Travis Greene will wrap up the competition with a closing concert.

Prayer Breakfast
Crown Expo Center – October 13

Return the next morning for a tasty breakfast and an inspirational message from Bishop Rudolph McKissick, Jr., with guest psalmist Maranda Curtis. This event presents another opportunity to visit the WIDU Expo.

Traditional Gospel Night
Crown Coliseum – October 13

Celebrate WIDU’s gospel heritage with thousands of other believers on this night. The line-up of guest artists
includes John P. Kee, Rance Allen and Lisa Knowles-Smith,
among other stellar gospel musicians.

gospelAnniversary Celebration: Kirk Franklin + Friends
Crown Coliseum – October 14

Join Kirk Franklin & Friends for the celebration’s grand finale, which will kick off with a big announcement of the Carolina’s Best winners. Gospel legend Kirk Franklin is returning to produce this signature event, and he will be joined on stage by Tasha Cobbs and Tye Tribbett for an unforgettable concert.

In addition to the signature events at the Crown Complex, several other WIDU Anniversary events will be taking place around Cumberland County from October 1st through the 14th; read more about those on WIDUAnniversary.com. Be sure to check out the Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau’s (FACVB) Calendar of Events for even more ideas on things to do while visiting the area. Our out-of-town guests may also find discounted room rates at select accommodations from a list of Partner Hotels, provided by the FACVB.
