A Weekend of Honor in Cumberland County

May 9, 2017

memorial day weekend fayetteville ncFor the communities of Cumberland County, the Memorial Day holiday represents much more than a three-day weekend. Visitors to this area find history and heroes around every corner all year. However, for this holiday, we honor specifically those military service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Each year, memorial day weekend fayetteville ncwe count on several Memorial Day events in Cumberland County to help us pay our respects to those men and women and to enjoy the freedom they gave their lives for.

The Field of Honor, hosted by the Downtown Alliance and Airborne and Special Operations Museum (ASOM), is a yearly reminder of the sacrifices made by our military members. It is also one of the longest running Fields of Honor in the United States. Hundreds of American flags line the ASOM’s Parade Grounds, representing veterans who have served in every military branch. Our locals and visitors may visit the field any time between May 20 and June 30, but Memorial Day weekend presents the perfect opportunity to stop and pay your respects to these brave men and women.

The ASOM also hosts an annual K9 Memorial Day Ceremony to remember and honor those Special Operations Forces’ canines and handlers who gave their lives serving in the line of duty. The special ceremony takes place on Memorial Day in front of the K9 Memorial, on the grounds of the ASOM. The museum will be open to the public that day, as well, with displays and activities planned for visitors.

The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra treats their audience to “A Symphonic Salute to the U.S. Armed Forces” on the day before Memorial Day each year. This free performance in Festival Park includes a series of patriotic and popular works. Concert-goers will also be able to grab dinner at the park, thanks to the onsite food trucks: R Burger, Babann’s Southern Fried Chicken, and Charlie’s Ice. Just be sure to bring chairs or blankets to enjoy the show and picnic.

Three of Cumberland County’s communities hold ceremonies on Memorial Day at various parks. You may attend a ceremony with the Town of Spring Lake at Veterans Park, the Town of Hope Mills at Hope Mills Municipal Park’s Veterans Memorial, or the City of Fayetteville at Freedom Memorial Park.
