Fayetteville, NC - Nearly 100 travel journalists from across the United States and Canada will visit Fayetteville and Cumberland County next week as part of Travel Media Showcase (TMS). They arrive August 22 and depart August 25th.

TMS offers a unique opportunity for travel journalists and representatives from travel industry destinations to meet one-on-one at a single location, for the purpose of exchanging information. “Additionally, writers who attend spend one afternoon and evening on a local Familiarization Tour exploring Fayetteville and Cumberland County,” says John Meroski, Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (FACVB) President and CEO . “The writers represent 400+ publications. The publicity value in hosing this show is tremendous. In fact, three stories are already in development.”

The show opens with dinner and entertainment at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden on Tuesday, August 22nd. Entertainment includes the Dogwood Trio and Heritage Restoration Chorale. “This will be a spectacular event that showcases Cumberland County as a place that celebrates America’s diversity,” says Rebecca Annillo, FACVB Special Projects Manager. “Volunteers from international clubs in native dress will line the walkway to the dinner, and food choices represent many of the nationalities in our community.”

On Wednesday, after a half-day of morning appointments with national and international destinations, journalists depart on Familiarization tours around Cumberland County. The five tours introduce aspects of the community:

- Militia, Medicine & Moonshine –Explores the history of Fayetteville, from pre-Revolutionary War times forward.

- Defending Freedom - All in a Day’s Work – Visits Fort Bragg, includes demonstrations, facility tours, a mess hall meal and much more.

- Kilts, Country and African American Contributions: An American Melting Pot – Highlights African American contributions to our local heritage. Includes historic re-enactments, personal narratives, home-life demonstrations, cultural landmarks, and stories of strength and courage from the slavery era to the Civil Rights.

- Argyll colony turns into Camp Bragg – Learn about Fort Bragg before it was Fort Bragg. Includes the story of the Scottish landowners and their communities; the Civil War Battle of Monroe's Crossroads; and the turpentining industry's impact on the area and England.

- Take Time To Tee Up – Offers an opportunity to savor two of our finest golf courses.

On Thursday, journalists spend the entire day in appointments with destination representatives. A luncheon sponsored by the North Carolina Division of Tourism will showcase the entire state to the journalists. Thursday’s dinner will reveal the 2007 location for Travel Media Showcase, and the dinner is sponsored by the 2007 host.

Either prior to or following the show, journalists have the opportunity to attend a Familiarization Tour sponsored by other North Carolina destinations, furthering their knowledge of this area and North Carolina.

“I’ve attended Travel Media Showcase for the past three years, and have built relationships with may journalists, especially hard-to-reach freelance writers, leading to publicity for greater Fayetteville,” says Melody Foote, FACVB Communications Manager. “Having the show to Cumberland County is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for nearly 100 journalists to learn about our community firsthand.”
