The Cumberland County School System is the fourth
largest public school system in North Carolina and the 76th largest
in the nation. The system consists of 88 schools, approximately
54,000 students, and is the second largest employer in Cumberland
County (behind the military).
The Cumberland County Schools include
53 elementary schools, 15 middle schools, 14 high schools (including
one year-round secondary school, a health and life sciences high
school, an Early College, and a Performance Learning Center), and
Evening and Web Academies. The elementary schools serve grades
pre-kindergarten through five, middle schools grades six through
eight, and high schools grades nine through 12.
There are 84 different native languages
spoken by students in the Cumberland County Schools with English,
Spanish, German, Korean, and Vietnamese as the top five. In order
to serve the needs of all children in the community, the Cumberland
County Schools offers a Governed Choice program in which parents
have the opportunity to choose where their children attend school.
All Cumberland County schools teach the standard North Carolina
curriculum; it is how the curriculum is taught that makes the difference.
Choice programs range from elementary to high school levels and
include locally developed models as well as nationally and internationally
proven models. Choices available include: Accelerated Learning,
Applied Technology, Arts, Communications, Core Knowledge, Engineering,
Finance, Fire Science, Foreign Language, Global Studies, International
Baccalaureate, Learning Styles, Natural Science, Manufacturing
Sciences, Math and Science, Montessori, Multiple Intelligences,
Safety and Security, and Year-Round.
Two classical high schools are also available with one offering
the year-round calendar.
The Cumberland County Schools practices site-based management of
its schools, where the school principal serves as the instructional
leader. Each school has a School Improvement Team (SIT) that consists
of the principal, teachers, parents, and students. The SIT makes
decisions regarding individual school policies and programs. Parent-Teacher
associations afford parents an opportunity to meet informally and
discuss educational issues.
The vision of the Cumberland County Schools is to be the school
system of choice where parents seek to send their children, and
children want to come.
