Methodist
College in Fayetteville is a senior, coeducational college of liberal
arts and sciences which opened in 1960 and graduated its first
class in 1964. Its motto is: "Truth and Virtue."
Methodist offers bachelor¹s degrees in 51 fields and launched
a master¹s degree program in physician assistant studies in
Fall 2001. The College offers day, evening, and online courses
year-roundfall, spring, and summer. Its business, teacher
education, physician assistant, professional golf management, professional
tennis management, and social work programs are nationally-accredited.
A
gifted and caring faculty, 62 student organizations and 19 intercollegiate
sports give students countless opportunities to develop their
talents and leadership skills. Methodist prides itself on its ³nurturing,
family-type atmosphere², its Honor Code and emphasis on
character development, and its strong support network for students.
The college employs a campus minister, physician¹s assistant,
career counselor/placement director, clinical counselor, a team
of academic tutors, and four athletic trainers.
Methodist
is a NCAA Division III member, offering nine intercollegiate
sports for men and ten sports for women. Football was added in
1989 and women¹s lacrosse will be added in Spring 2002.
MC competes in the Dixie Intercollegiate and Mason-Dixon athletic
conferences. Since 1989, its men¹s golf teams have won nine
national titles and the women¹s golf teams have won 13 national
titles.
Methodist¹s
7,551 graduates have been remarkably successful in a wide range
of fields. Outstanding alumni include: the dean of the Bryan
School of Business at UNC-Greensboro, the president of Young
Harris College in Georgia, and superintendents of the Cumberland
County and Northampton County, NC, school systems. In the Class
of 2000 (with 267 members), 47 percent majored in business or
economics, 19 percent in social science, 10 percent in science,
9 percent in education, 4 percent in medical science, and 2 percent
in the fine arts.
Under
the leadership of its third president, Dr. M. Elton Hendricks,
the College has added many curricula, sports, and buildings over
the last two decades. Enrollment has more than doubled since
1984. In 2000-2001, Methodist served a total of 2,187 full-time
students during its fall, spring, and summer semesters. In Fall
2001, the College enrolled 2,143, 1,439 in day classes and 821
in evening classes.
The
Methodist campus presents a striking blend of modern architecture
and natural beauty, occupying 617 acres along the Cape Fear River
six miles north of downtown Fayetteville. The campus includes
32 buildings, an 18-hole golf course, a three-and-a-half mile
nature trail and an amphitheater. In August 2000, the College
completed its first apartment-style residence hall, bringing
residential capacity to just under 800 students. A similar residence
hall is now under construction.
Methodist
College offers a wide range of financial aid, including: Presidential
Scholarships worth $3,000-$8,000 per year, federal and state
grants, campus work, and a variety of loan programs. All North
Carolina residents who enroll full-time (day or evening) are
eligible for the N. C. Legislative Tuition Grant worth $1,800
per year ($900 per semester).
