A Valentine’s Date with Our Breweries

January 25, 2018

Maybe Valentine’s Day has earned the reputation of being a “Hallmark holiday” for the ladies’ benefit, but I don't think I'm alone when I say, this day should be celebrated with much more than cards, chocolates, wine or flowers. What if our version of a perfect Valentine’s was indulging in local craft beer and tasty food? Because that’s what's on the menu at all five of Cumberland County’s breweries for this holiday. Whether you fall in the category of single or attached, I suggest you make a Valentine’s date with our breweries this year. Then everybody goes home happy.

Bright Light Brewing Company

Bar Crawl + Great Grub

You don’t even need a significant other to participate in the Cupid Crawl on February 10th; go solo or gather buddies for this night out in Downtown Fayetteville. The crawl kicks off at Bright Light Brewing Company, one of Fayetteville’s newest microbreweries to hit the scene. I suggest ordering a beer flight to sample their recently debuted brews. The next stop on the crawl is The Wing Company, where you’ll have a chance to try their award-winning wings (only the brave ones can handle the Creeper Reaper). At the final stop, Huske Hardware House, you’ll be introduced to one of Fayetteville’s favorite nightlife spots. Don’t miss out on their new seasonal brew, the Nor’Easter New England IPA. If all that beer has left you hungry, their full menu offers pub-style comfort food, and I’d look no further than the Brew Battered Fish & Chips or Bangers & Mash.

Tip: For those that like to hang late, stick around Huske for the DJ & Dancing that kicks off at 10:00 p.m., or step next door to the TapHouse at Huske for Karaoke with Gilbert Baez.

Four-Course Dinner & Dancing

Another new downtown brewery, Lake Gaston Brewing Company & Restaurant, is offering a “recipe for romance” at their Valentine’s Dinner on February 10th. For this private event, couples will be enjoying a plated four-course meal, prepared by Chef Luis Irizarry, with such tempting menu options as fresh oysters on the half shell and Cabernet-braised short ribs. In addition to craft beer, diners may purchase wine, champagne and non-alcoholic beverages. Music and dancing will make this date an elegant evening to remember, as well.

Tip: Make reservations now for the Valentine’s Carriage Rides, hosted by Cool Spring Downtown District. This 20-minute, romantic ride through downtown’s charming streets would be the perfect pre-dinner surprise for your date.

Steak Dinner for Two

Mash House Brewing Company hosts an annual Valentine’s Day Dinner for Two on February 14th, and it’s hard to beat the menu and the price. For just $60, couples will be served a shared appetizer, salad, prime rib for two and a shared dessert. Plus, the meal comes with either two glasses of wine or a select pitcher of beer. For that appetizer, I must suggest you try either the Crab Dip or the Fried Green Tomatoes, and you can’t go wrong with their Chocolate Stout Cake for the perfect ending to this date.

Tip: Before or after dinner, pay a visit to Anstead’s Tobacco Company—located just 1/2 mile from Mash House—for Be My Vitola Cigar & Wine Pairing. After making your selections, enjoy your two cigars and bottle of wine in the comfort of Anstead’s, or grab-and-go for later.

Brews + Bites + Buds

Yet one more fantastic date option for you is the Valentine’s Day Extravaganza, hosted by Dirtbag Ales Brewery & Taproom on February 14th. This exquisite event will be combining the talents of artists and artisans. The talented Marquis Jazz Trio and Tyler Pow will perform live. Chef Mei will serve heavy hors d’oeuvres—pairing well with the complimentary cask-conditioned ale—plus a decadent dessert. Take advantage of the onsite floral bar, provided by Gathered, and let these lovely ladies help you arrange a gorgeous bouquet of fresh flowers to take home.

Tip: Make sure you don't miss some of the evening's best entertainment: a special dance performance by Hayat Yoga Shala. Then join Hayat for a belly-dance lesson (you only live once, right?).
