Veterans Day Weekend: 30 Ways to Celebrate

John "Mr. E" Thompson, featured in the video below, is a United States Marine Corps veteran who calls the Fayetteville area home. He is also a talented craftsman and artist. He has also served as president of Rolling Thunder®, Inc. Chapter 1 NC, helping people to never forget our POW/MIA service members. Mr. E is the Fayetteville I know and have grown to love so much.

Here, in what we call "America's Hometown," I've found entrepreneurs taking risks on their dreams, veterans putting down roots in the community, artists pursuing their gifts, folks opening their arms wide to newcomers, and people giving from big hearts. The American dream looks different for each of us who calls this area "home," but our diversity is our greatest asset. Everyone has a different story of what brought them to the Fayetteville area, and many are here because of the military.

One fact my readers may not know about me is that I'm the spouse of a soldier, who has served his country for the last 15+ years. Having lived in other military communities, I recognize the fact Cumberland County is not the only patriotic community that celebrates veterans and says "thank you" to those who've served. However, I've discovered what is unique about "America's Hometown" is how united we are in doing just that, every opportunity we're given.

Thanks to the Fayetteville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau's Heroes Homecoming initiative, the communities of Cumberland County unite every year and plan multiple events for Veterans Day. This year marks the sixth Heroes Homecoming, and the biggest yet. Whether you're a visitor or a local to this area, I'm providing you with a list of 30 events to help you make your weekend plans. Plus, I'm highlighting a few of our downtown merchants that will be offering special discounts. Now I just want to offer you a personal invitation to join us this weekend as we celebrate our freedom defenders!

Veteran/Military Discounts

The following downtown merchants are either offering a special discount/deal over Veterans Day weekend or offering a year-round discount. While you're downtown, attending some events this weekend, it would be a great time to discover the array of boutiques, restaurants, services, and more that our Cool Spring Downtown District has to offer visitors. Of course, many other restaurants and businesses offer similar discounts all over Cumberland County.

You might see me celebrating our veteran artists at the Veterans Day Concert & Art Exhibit Friday night. On Saturday, I plan to hop on the back of my coworker's Harley and ride in the Heroes Homecoming Motorcycle Rally for the second year. Then it's off to the Airborne & Special Operations Museum to listen to A Centennial of Service Speaker Series. I'll be ending the full day at Dirtbag Ales with their Chili Cook-Off, craft beer, and cornhole. I really hope to see many of your faces at one or more of these fantastic events. This is your chance to stand #UnitedInService with our communities as we celebrate another Heroes Homecoming!
